Lights Go Out At Harbourside As Crest Nicholson Joinns Global Earth Hour

25 March 2010

- Local developer joins international blackout in support of action to tackle climate change -

For the second year running Crest Nicholson will be joining more than 1 billion people worldwide in supporting WWF’s global Earth Hour initiative.

At 8.30pm on Saturday 27th March, the developer will be simultaneously switching off the lights across more than 50 office and showhome sites around the UK, including Harbourside in Bristol, in support of action to tackle climate change.

The international blackout is part of a voluntary, worldwide sustainability movement in which individuals, businesses, communities and governments unite to raise awareness of the problems posed by climate change. By becoming part of a worldwide resolution to address global warming, Crest Nicholson hopes to inspire others to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle, demonstrating the simple measures that can be taken towards reducing our impact on the environment.

Susan Young, sales and marketing director at Crest Nicholson Regeneration, explains: “Earth Hour is all about taking accountability for our own carbon footprints. Even the smallest behavioural changes can make a huge amount of difference and that’s something we strive to facilitate across all our developments. At Harbourside, for example, environmentally aware features such as recycling facilities and cycle racks are all included as standard.”

The development achieved a Building for Life gold standard from the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), the Government’s advisor on architecture, urban space and public space and the Home Builders Federation (HBF).

Susan adds: “Whilst we always turn off the lights in our showhomes and marketing suite overnight, by co-ordinating with thousands of other people and switching off the lights simultaneously we are not only helping to make a strong visual statement, but it is also a direct reflection of our commitment to reduce carbon dioxide emissions arising from our own office and site activity by 25% by 2020. Turning out the lights is one of the most immediate and practical steps that we can all take towards reducing our impact on the environment, and it’s been exciting for us to be able to make such a strong local impact with an international campaign.”

Crest Nicholson has emerged as one of the UK’s leading housebuilders in terms of responding to the challenges represented by climate change. In November last year, the company was named ‘Sustainable Housebuilder of the Year’ in the Housebuilding Innovation Awards, having already won the same category in the Sustainability Awards in 2008, and is committed to delivering on the government's targets to achieve more efficient, more sustainable housing.

The latest phase, called Ensign House, comprises 27, one and two-bedroom apartments, including a selection of spacious, bay-fronted properties that boast stunning views directly across Bristol’s historic floating harbour.

Prices at Harbourside currently start at £270,000 for two-bedroom apartments.
